Announces

THE 2007 SCHOOLS’ BICENTENARY ESSAY COMPETITION

OBJECTIVES:  To foster an awareness about Africa, slavery and the abolition                            movement among young people in Jamaica. To enhance the public
                           education programme of the JNBC. To encourage independent thought
                           and the investigative skills of students, and encourage an appreciation for
                           the craft of the historian.

ESSAY TOPIC:  “Explain the factors that led to the abolition of the British trans-Atlantic
                            trade in Africans.”

LENGTH:            Maximum 2500 words, typed, double-spaced, using size 12 font

ELIGIBILITY:    The competition is open to registered students in Secondary Schools in
                            Jamaica who are between the ages of 14 and 18.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE:  December 15, 2007.
                            Submit by regular mail or courier service (DHL, FEDEX, etc) to one of
                            the following outlets:

1:  The JNBC Secretariat, c/o Prof. V. Shepherd, Faculty of Humanities and Education,
     UWI, Mona, Kingston 7

2: Mr. Vivian Crawford, Director, Institute of Jamaica East Street, Kingston, Jamaica

DATE OF AWARD:       February 2008

RULES:               1. The essay must be the students' own effort
                            2. Information obtained from other sources must be properly
                                acknowledged – at least 5 references
                            3. Submissions which show evidence of plagiarism will be
                                disqualified
                            4. Entries must state clearly the name of the student, his/her Class/form,
                                age, contact information and the name and mailing/e-mail address of
                                the school. The submission must also bear the school stamp and
                                signature of the Principal
                            5. Entries must NOT be sent in via e-mail or Fax

PRIZES:              1st place winner: The JNBC/IRIE FM/IOJ Trophy & J$50,000
                            2nd place winner: J$30,000 + book prizes including Trading Souls and
                                                       Saving Souls
donated by Ian Randle Pubs.
                            3rd place winner: J$20,000 + book vouchers tenable at local book
                                                       stores.
                                      
JUDGES:            Judges will be selected from among history teachers at the High School,
                            College and University levels in Jamaica.
