The Jamaica National Bicentenary Committee

Announces

The Jamaica National Bicentenary Arrival Point Monument
Design Competition

CRITERIA & GUIDELINES for ENTRY

To mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the Trans-Atlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans to Jamaica, the Jamaica National Bicentenary Committee, with sponsorship from the Tourism Enhancement Fund, the Office of the Mayor of the KSAC and the Gleaner Company Ltd., (working through its Monuments, Memorialization & Exhibitions Sub-Committee), has launched the Ancestral Arrival Point Monument Design Competition. The winning design should reflect the official slogan for the year - Our Freedom Journey … Honouring our Ancestors” – as well as the purpose outlined below:

ELIGIBILITY

The competition is open to Jamaican artists (including those living abroad) who can design, execute, and supervise execution of the monument proposed.

PURPOSE

The Purpose of the competition is twofold:

  • To say that the institution of chattel slavery was a crime against humanity is to recall the pain, suffering, and anguish our African ancestors endured so that we, their descendants, could be here today.  While time and modern life have conspired to erase our memory of their ordeal, the Jamaica National Bicentenary Committee has, through this monument competition, devised a means for all Jamaicans to recall and honour our ancestors.
  • To select a suitable design for a monument to be erected at a prominent place on the Kingston Waterfront to mark the spot where Africans disembarked after their forced, cruel and inhumane Trans-Atlantic Journey from Africa to Jamaica.
  1. GUIDELINES
    1. Each entrant must determine his/her own area of focus and present an interpretation of an original design.  The design must, however, reflect the spirit of the official slogan and purpose (see above). The design should also take into consideration the parish/location (KINGSTON) of the monument and its slavery history.
    1. All entrants will be asked to verify their work as a true original work by a Justice of the Peace (JP).
    1. Each design must be accompanied by a summary description of 50-100 words, typed and double-spaced on letter-sized paper.  This summary should include an explanation of the entrant’s reasons for choosing the particular design and should relate to the slogan and purpose.
    1. A bibliography of history or other sources consulted to justify the design should accompany the summary description.
    1. All entries must be tagged with the person’s full name, address, telephone numbers, e-mail address, and date of birth.
    1. The artwork is to be mounted on card stock (e.g. Bristol) or poster/illustration (matte) board; Size 12”x18”.  The artwork should be accompanied by a Macquette - Size H18 X W12 X D6, and it should be to scale with the artwork - that will provide a three dimensional view of what is being proposed
    1. An outline of the materials to be used for the erection of the proposed monument is required along with a testament of its durability due to its exposure to sea breezes, sea water, hurricane force winds, storm surges and the like.
    1. The design must be accompanied by a detailed budget for the erection of the monument.

 4.         JUDGING CRITERIA:

  • Creativity
  • Relevance to theme
  • Quality of Presentation
  • Visual Impact
  • Durability – must be of sturdy construction
  • Artist must present a plan for erection of the monument and outline its maintenance needs overtime.
