Professor Verene A. Shepherd

This year will provide us with a great opportunity to educate and re-educate ourselves on the details of the Trans-Atlantic Trade in Africans and the struggles of enslaved people like Boukman, Nanny & Tacky, to eradicate the most brutal system of exploitation ever visited on human beings by other human beings.  It will allow us to celebrate the achievements of our ancestors, especially their triumph over enslavement.

Above all, 2007 should compel is to reflect on the testy reality that those who benefited most from slavery have yet to adequately compensate the descendants of enslaved peoples for past wrongs.  We should insist that they make amends, if only as an act of reconciliation and moral obligation.

Finally, we thank all those who have contributed to the staging of this function, especially our sponsors and artistes especially our sponsors and artistes who have given liberally of their resources, time and talent.  The ancestors will bless you.
