MS. DONNA McFARLANE

CHAIR, MONUMENTS/EXHIBITION/MEMORIAL

DONNA MCFARLANE

DIRECTOR/CURATOR
LIBERTY HALL: THE LEGACY OF MARCUS GARVEY

  1. BA - Political Science – Queens College, City University of New York, 1976
  2. MA– Development Economics – The New School for Social Research, New York, 1979
  3. MA – Museum Studies – University of Leicester, UK, 2003
  4. PhD Candidate – Museum Studies - University of Leicester, UK, 2005

A Development Economist with over twenty five years of experience, Donna McFarlane has worked for international organizations including the World Bank, the IADB and IICA on development projects in the Caribbean that range from leveraging international funds for small-scale private sector development, to assessing the role of rural women in agriculture.  She has undertaken long-term contracts with the Government of Jamaica and gained valuable experience in national and sector policy development, planning and implementation.

As a Museologist, Ms. McFarlane believes that museums are valuable educational institutions that can engage the minds of adults and youth alike.  She is therefore committed to creating interactive museums in which the stories of Africans in Africa and its Diaspora are represented, from their historical perspectives.  As the first Director/Curator of Liberty Hall: The Legacy of Marcus Garvey she designed and built the first museum in the world in honour of Jamaica’s first National Hero, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, and the first multimedia museum in the Caribbean.   Ms. McFarlane also directs the development of Liberty Hall as a cultural/educational institution that benefits residents of the surrounding inner-city communities of downtown Kingston first, then all of Jamaica, and the world.
