SENATOR NORMAN WASHINGTON GRANT,
Dip. Mgmt. & Acct., FMAT, FCCA, MBA, JP
A Chartered Accountant by profession and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica and England (Fellow Status). Senator Grant is also a member of the Association of Accounting Technicians, London (Fellow Status) and a member of the Association of Public Accountants in Jamaica.
For the past twenty three (23) years he has been employed at the Mavis Bank Coffee Factory Limited where he has worked in several capacities. Currently, he is the Managing Director and CEO. He is also a Distinguished Certified International Coffee Cup Taster.
Senator Grant was educated at Mt. Fletcher All Age School, Jamaica College and Duff’s Business College where he holds a Diploma in Management and Accounting and was nominated the most outstanding male student in 1986. He attended the Institute of Management and Production (IMP), Accounting Consortium of Jamaica and the University of Manchester and Wales, where he completed his MBA in December 1999. He majored in International Business Strategy, Bank Financial Management and Human Resource Management.
He is President of the Jamaica Agricultural Society and President of the Kingston and St. Andrew Association of Branch Societies/JAS. He is former Chairman of the National Consultative Committee of People’s Cooperative Bank, a position he retained from 1994 to 2003. Chairman of the Jamaica 4H Clubs Board of Management and President of the Caribbean 4H Council. He was first appointed Senator in May 2001 and later re-appointed in November 2002. Senator Grant was appointed Chairman of the Caribbean Farmers Association Network (CaFAN) in February 2005.
In 1992 he was a member of the delegation led by Mr. Kingsley Thomas, Managing Director of the then Agricultural Credit Bank of Jamaica that went to Canada to negotiate for the Integrated People’s Cooperative Bank Network (IPCBN) Programme, i.e. the upgrading of the PC Banks.
He is a member of the Lay Magistrates Association of St. Andrew and a member of the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association in London.
Senator Grant is a Minister of Religion, a member of the Executive Board of the Pilgrim’s Church of God of Jamaica and National Youth’s Director. He is married with three (3) children.
He is also a coffee and goat farmer.
In 1993 he was appointed a Minister of Religion, assigned to the Pilgrim’s Church of God Tower Hill, the branch where he has been appointed Assistant Pastor. Since 2003 he has been assigned additional responsibility to assist the Kingston branch on Whitehall Avenue.
Community Involvement
Senator Grant is well known for his involvement in the community and has served in many capacities in the community of Mavis Bank and its environs. He served as:
- Chairman of the Mavis Bank High School Board and former Chairman of the Finance Committee
- Chairman of the Westphalia All Age School Board
- Member of the Hall’s Delight JAS Group and President of the Kingston and St. Andrew Association of Branch Societies of the JAS.
- He is former Chairman of the St. Andrew Hillside Agricultural Project, a Project that he wrote and got funding in 1996 for some $J15M to assist over 2000 farmers in Eastern St. Andrew with the establishment of coffee.
- He is former Chairman of the St. Andrew People’s Cooperative Bank a position he held from 1990-2003 and lead the process of the establishment of coffee in the Parish of the National Consultative Committee of People’s Cooperative Bank between 1994 and 2003 where he oversaw the rationalization of merging 116 small banks into now one National Bank. He sees this as one of his major achievements.
Senator Grant has received many awards, among them are:
- Long service award from the Pilgrim’s Church of God Tower Hill
- Long service award from the Pilgrim’s of God Mavis Bank and the Youth’s Department
- An award from the Mavis Bank Home Care for over ten (10) years invaluable contribution towards improving the quality of life for the elderly in Mavis Bank and its environs
- An award from the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association in London for Regional participation in Gender Conference
- Ben Sutherland Award presented by the Parks Road Community in West Rural St. Andrew for outstanding leadership in business and for agricultural and community development
